West Bradley Orchards wins ‘Best Innovative Cider Apple Orchard’ at Bath & West Show

Edward Clifton-Brown and Roger Larder awarded Innovation Prize at Bath & West Show

Edward Clifton-Brown and Roger Larder awarded Innovation Prize at Bath & West Show

Our Somerset orchard has won the top prize for the Best Innovative Cider Orchard at the Royal Bath & West Show 2018!

West Bradley Orchards, near Glastonbury, was described by the judges as “containing more experimental trials than any of the other orchards which we judged. Four apple varieties, three rootstocks, four support systems, and three different tree spacings will guide growers of future orchards in Somerset into producing the most economic and high-quality apples.”
Edward Clifton-Brown, who has owned the orchards for 30 years, said: “We’re thrilled to have won such a prestigious award. We pride ourselves on producing high quality fruit across all our varieties. We do this partly by employing new methods and techniques, to maximise our fruit production and ensure exceptional quality.

”An award for innovation is a most welcome reward. Making West Bradley Orchards the best cider apple orchards I can has always been my goal. It’s what makes getting out of bed to visit the orchards every day worth it – and at 89 years of age that motivation is what keeps me relatively young!”
— Edward Clifton-Brown

Visitors are able to see West Bradley Orchards for themselves in September, when the orchards are open to the public for the Pick-Your-Own weekends, which run each weekend from Friday to Sunday. Find out more here.

Edward concludes: “We’ve got some ten apple and pear varieties growing including bright red Lord Lambourne apples, juicy Russets and ever-popular Cox’s, plus Comice and Concord pears. We look forward to welcoming visitors to the Pick-Your-Own weekends this September to taste for themselves how our innovative techniques translate to our fruit!”

One of only three dessert apple orchards in Somerset and spread over 70 acres, West Bradley Orchards has been growing apples commercially for over a century and sells cider apples, dessert apples, pears and walnuts. Fruit from West Bradley Orchards goes into award winning ciders from across the country including Thatcher’s and The Shepton Mallet Cider Mill.

Pick Your Own opened by Local MP

Our Pick Your Own got off to a busy start last weekend with local MP David Warburton joining us for a picnic on the first day. He picked some delicious Lord Lambourne apples before taking a walk through the orchards, which are looking beautiful even if we say so ourselves!

We’re delighted with this year’s crop, despite a tough frost earlier in the year which resulted in less fruit the quality is unaffected, in fact for a lot of our varieties it’s the best ever! We’ve got some super varieties to pick from, including bright red Lord Lambourne apples, juicy Russets and ever-popular Cox’s, plus Comice and Concord pears. The apple press proved incredibly popular last weekend and many of our visitors left with bottles of freshly pressed juice.

Once again it really was fabulous to visit West Bradley Orchards and be able to launch this year’s very busy Pick Your Own season. It’s always such a great occasion and I’d highly recommend it for a taste of the great outdoors, a lot of fun and a bit of a taste of the best fruit around too! Again, I’ve been stunned by the great work that goes on at the Orchards – their scientific approach combined with overwhelming energy and enthusiasm. As ever, the apples are perfect! I couldn’t recommend it more for a fantastic family visit.
— David Warburton MP, Member of Parliament for Somerton and Frome

West Bradley is one of the few orchards in the West of England to offer the unique opportunity to visit a working apple farm and select your own produce. The trees are weighed down with fruit and there is a fantastic selection of over 15 eating and cooking apples to choose from, three delicious pear varieties, plus honey from eight bee hives kept on the farm.

So, make sure you don’t miss the last two weekends:

Pick Your Own weekends opened by Local MP

We opened our ‘Pick Your Own’ weekends this September with a picnic attended by local MP David Warburton and his family.

The Pick Your Own days take place every weekend in September, with visitors invited to pick and purchase their own apples and pears. West Bradley is one of the only orchards in the West of England to offer this unique opportunity to visit a working apple farm and select your own produce.

David Warburton MP, Member of Parliament for Somerton and Frome, said at the opening “It was terrific to visit West Bradley Orchards to launch this year's Pick Your Own season. I’m always amazed by the extraordinary work that goes on at the Orchards – their scientific approach to getting fruit absolutely perfect, combined with such astonishing energy and enthusiasm.  The result this year, as ever, are apples that are second to none! I couldn’t recommend it more for a fantastic family visit.”

We’re delighted with this year’s crop, although it is a surprisingly late season, and are looking forward to introducing visitors to the many varieties we have on offer. The apple press proved incredibly popular last weekend and many of our visitors left with bags of apples and pears as well as bottles of freshly pressed juice. We look forward to welcoming more visitors in the coming weekends as the apples finish ripening on the trees.
